Shah Rukh Khan sweeps Zee Cine Awards in London

April 29, 2008 |11:58 | Gossips | Interviews | Parties  By : Team X

“London is my favourite, favourite place in the world!” Shah Rukh Khan beamed when he collected his Best Actor award for ‘Chak De! India’ at last Saturday’s Zee Cine Awards 2008 in London.

The ‘Bollywood Bafta’ was presented to him by Bollywood’s original diva, Rekha who stunned the sell-out crowd by reciting the rhyme ‘Jack and Jill’ and singing a few lines from the classic Asha Bhosle track, ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’ from the film ‘Umrao Jaan’. Khan performed his ‘Om Shanti Om’ number with at least ten other stars on stage. “Why didn’t you call me on stage to dance with you?” Rekha asked Khan. “Oh Rekhaji, we have grown too old for you!” he cheekily replied.

Khan’s win was no surprise: he was nominated twice in the Best Actor’s category for the aforementioned ‘Chak De! India’ and for his blockbuster ‘Om Shanti Om’. Khan also won the first ever ‘Lifestyle Icon’ award, which broke into half when he collected it. The ‘King Khan’ ended by thanking his London fans: “It is the overseas audience who have made me the star I am.”

Shilpa’s best support

“I’m ecstatic; I have been nominated so many times but I never won,” a visibly tearful Shilpa Shetty cried when she collected her award for Best Supporting actress for ‘Life in a Metro’. Looking stunning as usual in a long white dress, Shetty was accompanied by her producer boyfriend Raj Kundra and her mom. Shetty retained her trademark dignity when she encountered not only one but two of her alleged cheating ex-boyfriend’s former girlfriends: Raveena Tandon and Pooja Bhatra. “This city has gifted me so many awards,” Shetty beamed. “I am so lucky to have the best support system in the world: my parents.”

Readers pick: Bollywood's most over-rated

April 10, 2008 |11:23 | Gossips | Interviews | Movies | Parties  By : Team X

There's a thin line between good and great. What may strike as effective might not necessarily be exceptional.
While some film stars are naturally charismatic and hopelessly fortunate to bag a top rating for every single achievement, others have a knack to blow their trumpet to the best of their abilities.

Does that really make them incomparable? We asked you to vote for Bollywood's most over-rated actors. And the stinging response was reminiscent of Aamir Khan's punchy one-liner in Rangeela: Apun public hai. Kisi ko bhi gira sakta hai [I am the public. I can reject anyone].

So, here they are, rediff.com readers, your selection of top ten over-rated heroes and heroines:

Shah Rukh Khan

He may saucily croon 'I am the best'. An overwhelming majority, however, voted Shah Rukh Khan as Bollywood's topmost over-rated actor.

Even though most agree his work in Swades and Chak De! India was competent, they feel the eloquent star's has made a career out of playing Raj/ Rahul clones in mush after mush. And to add to the injury, won awards too!

Interestingly, SRK made light of this very sentiment in his recent blockbuster, Om Shanti Om.

Wednesday announced the appointment of Bollywood star Aamir Khan as the brand ambassador for its new range of mobile phones.

The announcement was made at the launch of Samsung's five new sleek and stylish phones that exemplify cutting-edge technology and design innovation in Mumbai. The actor, lauded by all and sundry for making 'Taare Zameen Par', was present at the function here.

So when Aamir was approached by the mobile company, Samsung, to promote their brand, it seemed to be a direct challenge to SRK, who endorses Nokia.

Samsung is aiming to double its market share in India and they have now Aamir endorsing their products.

At the press meet, when a journalist asked Aamir how he perceives competition from SRK, Aamir grinned, "As always, Shah Rukh Khan prefers being number two."

The Taare Zameen Par actor-director denied that he was joining Indian Cricket League or will own any cricket team in the future like SRK, who owns the Kolkata team for Indian Premier League.

"I am not purchasing any team but as a fan, I love to watch cricket," Aamir said.

Kolkata, the city of lakes, saw it's first ever IPL team being officially launched by none other than Bollywood Badshah - Shah Rukh Khan. Coach and captain of Kolkata team, John Buchanan and Sourav Ganguly were also present at this glamorous launch. Juhi Chawla, a very dear friend of SRK and partner in his company, Dreamz Unlimited, also graced the occasion. SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment members and staff managed to be a part of this grand event in spite of Indian Premier League's second auction in Mumbai on the same day.

'Knight Riders', is the exclusive name given to the Kolkata Team which depicts the strength of the warriors (cricketers) all geared up to battle it out on the pitch. Black and gold is used for the entire conceptual design of the team, wherein Black stands for 'Maa Kaali' (Goddess Durga) and gold portrays 'win'. The cricket kit is designed by sports gear giant Reebok. The formal clothing for the players would be carved by a designer who has dressed up all the top Bollywood heroines from Kareena Kapoor to Rani Mukherjee and is responsible behind their sensuous looks on-screen, Manish Malhotra. With such lavish expenditure on the official launch and designer clothes for the team, it screams aloud a Bollywood star cricket team's arrival.
