Aamir Khan to Hrithik to Abhishek: Gowariker's obsession with history: With ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ slated for a 3rd December release, director Ashutosh Gowariker continues his love for the golden pages of history. This film marks his 3rd period piece after making the cult ‘Lagaan’ and the thumping ‘Jodha Akbar’.
Ashutosh Gowariker is renowned for his obsession with the past. He made it big by helming Aamir Khan’s ‘Lagaan’, a film that created history and went on to knock at the Oscar’s doors. Lagaan, however, was not exactly based on a true story as its story was fictional. However, the settings and the ambience enlivened the British Raj and made for a thrilling and satisfying watch.
Gowariker also made ‘Swades’ with Shahrukh Khan but it was not a historical piece. The director leapt to the pages of history with ‘Jodha Akbar’ for which he cast the demure Aishwarya Rai and the handsome Hrithik Roshan. The film appealed heavily to both the masses and the critics and was the film of the year.
And now Gowariker has flicked his wand again to conjure up the story of freedom fighter Surya Sen and his gang of men in ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.’ Abhishek Bachchan is portraying the lead role of Master da Surya Sen and Deepika Padukone is playing the accomplice Kalpana Dutta. The film hits screens on 3rd December.
